Keyan is famous for its Yugu (bone of cloud) Stone. As a amazing legacy of quarrying started since Sui and Tang Dynasty, Yugu Stone rises from the earth and stabs into the sky, with zigzag shape wider in upper part while narrow in lower part, like a up-side-down pagoda. Its height is more than 30 meters, but its circumference of the root is only 4 meter. Seen from distance, it seems raising mist heading the sky, so it is also called “censor smoke”. There are two characters, Yugu (Chinese Characters：云骨) inscribed on it, which were made during years of Guangxu in Qing Dynasty. The two characters are both taller than a man. On top of the Stone, there are old cypresses, which has grown for over 1000 years according to research and verification. It’s said that Mi Fu, famous calligrapher in Song Dynasty, who love amazing stone very much, was obsessed by Yugu Stone’s beautiful and rarely seen shape, and once stay here for days to appreciate the Stone.

Not far away from Yugu Stone is Keyan Stone Buddha, which was created by Tang Dynasty’s monk. Using a natural rock over 10 zhang (1 zhang ≈ 3.3 m), the sculpture was made into a sitting Maitreya, as high as 10.6 meters. The Buddha sculpture has amiable appearance and its technique is excellent, valuable for ancient sculpture study. Additionally, here there are sights including Chanhua Cave, Qixing Cave, Bat Cave, all produced by ancient quarrying. These caves are all deep and quiet with various sights. With years of development, Keyan has a group of new sights including Stone Lotus (made by 99 large stones), Qixing Cave, Three Traditional Religions (Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism), Yue Region Sight, Jingshui Waterfall, Garden of Famous Shaoxing People, all with different style as new tourist attractions of Shaoxing.

Yuanshan Garden

The Garden is made with Tang Dynasty style. According to the natural mountain terrain, it extends among mountains. The Mountain Gate, Heyuan Wall, Bell Tower, Temple of God of Wealth, Maitreya Temple, Buddha Temple, Palm Mountain, Arhat Temple, and Longyao Lake are all grand and beautiful. The Garden is the largest Tang-style imitating architecture group in China. The Buddha Temple covers an area of 1000 square, as high as 25 meters, and it is built with creative multi-eaves structure,0 and upturned eaves are as high as 4 meters, like a flying eagle. Arhat Temple in the Garden there is 18 life-size arhat sculptures, answering to stone culture, and they are worth appreciation.

Garden of Famous Shaoxing People

The Garden includes sculptures of famous people of Shaoxing from ancient time to today, like Dayu, Wang Xizhi, Lu You, Xu Wei, Qiu Jin, Zhou Enlai, Zhou Shuren, Zhu Kezhen. Matched with nearby beautiful stones, green trees and grass, as well as Famous Shaoxing People Museum, the Garden serves as a patriotic education base with its great aesthetic interest.

Jingshui Bay
